Purpose

1   To provide the public with adequate fire protection installed to civic standards.

Procedure

2   (1) A fire hydrant shall be located within 75 m of any part of the exterior perimeter of any building other than a single-family dwelling or a duplex.

(2) Where a builder or developer is required by the City to install a water main and fire hydrant(s) on private property

(a) plan and profile drawings of the works sealed by a registered professional engineer shall be submitted for civic approval before construction of the works;

(b) the works shall be installed in strict accordance with the above-mentioned standards;

(c) a statutory right-of-way in favour of the City shall be registered over the works; and

(d) as built drawings of the works shall be submitted to the City.

(3) The cost of survey and registration of the statutory right-of-way shall be borne by the builder or developer.

(4) The completed works shall become the property of the City, and will be operated and maintained by the City as part of the civic waterworks system at no cost to the owner of the property; however, the cost of maintaining the hydrant(s) will be charged to the property owner in older installations where a statutory right-of-way has not been registered.
