Policy C004-09
1 The City seeks to recognize noteworthy contributions and achievements of individuals that provide a benefit to the community by submitting a nomination for an external award.
2 The purposes of this policy are to
(a) encourage, support and recognize, and
(b) establish a process to nominate
an individual that brings distinction to themselves and to the City in a broad area of endeavours for an external award.
5 In this policy:
"external award" means an award given by an external body to recognize and honour any individual that has served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the majority of the residents of the City, including, but not limited to, the Order of British Columbia and the British Columbia Community Achievement Award;
"external award nomination package" means the external award nomination form and any supporting documents.
Division 1 — Nomination Process
6 (1) The City Clerk’s Office will coordinate and manage all duties related to the preparation of external award nomination packages
(2) The City Clerk’s Office will receive external award nomination packages and forward the packages to the Awards and Recognition Advisory Committee
(3) The Awards and Recognition Advisory Committee will review all external award nomination packages and provide recommendations for council's consideration.
(4) Upon endorsement of the external award nomination package by council , the City Clerk' Office will submit it accordingly.
7 Council will evaluate and select individuals for nomination of an external award using the following criteria, the individual:
(a) is deemed to be an outstanding individual who has been involved in community service, such as board, commissions or community groups;
(b) has demonstrated a sustained commitment to the betterment of the majority of the residents of Abbotsford;
(c) is perceived by council as a community leader;
(d) has served to influence decision-making on issues other than professional;
(e) has demonstrated, through their civic involvement, how the quality of life in the community has been enhanced; and
(f) has demonstrated excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business and profession throughout their entire career.
8 Council will not consider an individual who is an elected federal, provincial or municipal representative while that person remains in office.
